This 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertible is a final-year example that was sold new by Solano Volkswagen of Vacaville, California, and purchased by the seller in 2010, reportedly from the second owner. The car is finished in Olympic Blue over a black interior and is powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes a black soft top, high-back bucket seats, chrome bumpers, a VDO tachometer, and a Sapphire AM/FM radio. Work completed in February 2021 included installing a replacement distributor, fuel filter, intake tubes and gaskets, and gearshift rod coupling and bushing in addition to adjusting the valves, rebuilding the carburetor, and performing an oil change.
The car was originally finished in Olympic Blue (L51P), and it is believed to have been repainted red under previous ownership and later refinished in its current blue. Features include chrome bumpers with overriders, chrome mirrors, and a replacement black soft top with glass rear window that was installed in 2012 aLording to the seller.
Steel 15” wheels are said to have been powder-coated and wear chrome VW hubcaps along with 165/80 Kumho Power Star 758 tires showing 2007 date codes. Brake work under current ownership has included installing overhauled wheel cylinders and replacement brake lines, rotors, pads, and shoes aLording to the seller.
The high-back bucket seats and rear bench seat were reupholstered in black vinyl in 2012 and are joined by a matching dash and salt-and-pepper carpets. Equipment includes shoulder restraints, a Sapphire XIX AM/FM radio, a heater, hand-crank windows, and a locking glove box. The seller notes blank speaker holes in the door panels and cracks in the face of the dash, which can be seen in the gallery. The throttle pedal assembly was overhauled in February 2021.
A four-spoke steering wheel with the Wolfsburg crest frames a 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and a fuel gauge. A VDO tachometer has been added in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer is believed to have rolled over once and shows 49k miles, approximately 2k of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.
The 1.6-liter flat-four is said to be a replacement that was installed in the late 1980s, and it features a single carburetor and an open-element air filter. Work completed in February 2021 by Seaside Automotive of Anacortes, Washington included installing a replacement distributor, fuel filter, intake tubes, and gaskets as well as adjusting the valves, rebuilding the carburetor, and performing an oil change.
Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. A replacement gearshift rod coupling and bushing was installed in February 2021.
The 2018 Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen Zertifikat shows factory colors and equipment and indicates a build date of October 15, 1973.
